Omega 3’s and Cardiovascular Health

Gerry Morton December 31, 2012

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to our bodies; however, our bodies are unable to produce them. Therefore, they will need to be added via food or supplements.

Many fish such as tuna and salmon have omega-3 fatty acids and some nut oils do, too. The American Heart Association recommendation is to eat fish twice-a-week. However, even families that eat fish often typically do not eat enough to get the proper amount of this important fatty acid in their bodies. This is where supplements come in handy.
Benefits of Omega-3
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, this essential fatty acid helps lower the risk of cardiovascular problems like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease. It also reduces inflammation. When there is not enough omega-3 in the body, there can be symptoms of dry skin, mood swings, poor circulation, and fatigue.
Omega-3 can raise HDL, or the good cholesterol, in the body while reducing the fats in the blood, or triglycerides. There have been many research studies published that help show a link between omega-3 and the reduction in lower cholesterol numbers. Reducing cholesterol helps lower the risk of heart attack and stroke. Lowering bad cholesterol while raising good cholesterol can have a beneficial result on your total cholesterol numbers, which may reduce your need to take statins and other cholesterol-lowering medications.  In addition, studies have shown that using omega-3 fatty acids helps lower high blood pressure.
Lastly, there has been research showing that two of the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, were instrumental in lowering high cholesterol and high blood pressure, two risk factors for heart disease. It will also help slow any plaque and blood clot development within the arteries. This helps protect against the chance of stroke due to plaque and clot buildups.

Try Omega-3 Supplements
Getting enough omega-3 in your diet can easily achieved by omega-3 supplements, especially for those who do not get two or more servings of fish a week.  In addition to all the health benefits noted above, after beginning an omega-3 supplement regimen, you may notice that you look and feel better, with more energy.
