Multivitamins: Why Every Family Needs Them

Gerry Morton January 16, 2013

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, approximately 40% of us use multivitamins. Taking this simple capsule or tablet every day is an easy way to ensure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs daily.

Daily stresses, work, and improper diet are all ways that the body can not get the vitamins and minerals it needs to function properly. Sometimes this deficiency manifests itself as dull dry skin, lifeless hair, or rigid nails. Other times, it can result in health problems and conditions. Many vitamins often included in good multivitamin supplements such as EnergyFirst’s EnergyOne Complete Mega Multivitamin help stave off illness.
The following highlights some of the key elements of multivitamins and the specific benefits derived from them:
  • Vitamin D is a great supplement for the entire family. Studies have shown that this vitamin helps with chronic disease and helps reduce some of the risk factors for cancer.  Vitamin D can be taken as part of a multi-vitamin or as its own supplement. Vitamin D also helps with increased immunity and healthier joints.
  • Folic acid, long known to be beneficial for all pregnant women, not only helps with the prevention of newborn neural tube defects, it also helps after birth. Folic acid has been shown to lower risk for breast and colon cancer in men and women. Folic acid is also needed to help reduce the chances of heart disease.
  • Vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin, is needed to help with eye health and vision. It is an important vitamin for healthy skin appearance as well.  Vitamin A is also known as retinol in many dermatological formulas. Vitamin A deficiency can contribute to night blindness and hyperkeratosis.
An American Medical Association 2002 study described in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that the elderly and those at risk of some chronic disease can benefit from vitamin supplements. The study stated that:

“[M]ost people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone. Pending strong evidence of effectiveness from randomized trials, it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements.”

Multivitamins are a great way to keep your body healthy and nutrient-rich. Keep your risk factors for cancer and cardiovascular disease lowered by keeping this supplement as a staple in your dietary plan.
